The function of HRM involves planning, staffing, employee development, and maintenance. Thus, performing enterprises typically efficiently acquire the services of employees, improve their skills, provide a highly motivating environment and ensures that such employees are continuously committed to work in the same premise. Regarding the brief explanation, the essay presents HRM based on the motivation of employees and why it is important to the managers with a focus on its purpose and function. This will be elaborated based on two case scenarios whereby one enterprise has exemplary performance on HRM while the other has a dismal performance.
The case of Exemplary Performance: American Express Inc.
The American Express Inc. is headquartered in New York with 55,000 employees. The company currently has a performance index of 9.653 with a success rate of over 60 percent (American Express, 2017). The management of the enterprise realized that HRM is purposed to ensure a good result. Thus, all the activities in the HRM docket circulate on employee motivation. Consequently, the management lays much of its efforts on behaviors of employees. Employee behavior is the most important factor that the top management of the enterprise considers besides the inclusion of other elements of motivation such as the issuance of bonuses, increment of salaries, ratings among others (American Express, 2017).
On a separate note, the employees have the freedom to express themselves and share with the management regarding their expectations as well as developing teamwork. This kind of inclusive impacts positively to emotional levels of employees as well as increasing their morale when performing their tasks. Besides, their behaviors encourage collaboration and respect for others which ensures high performance hence increase productivity (American Express, 2017).
Ensuring that American Express Inc. has such employees, the management has developed a criterion whereby their recruiting efforts focus on employees with hospitality backgrounds, and their training techniques involve interpersonal skills instead of focusing only on the technical skills (American Express, 2017).
Case of Dismal Performance: Wal-Mart Enterprise
Wal-Mart enterprise is a globally known entity that was incorporated in 1969. The company has approximately 50 stores in the USA with other 27 locations in different countries with supermarkets, hypermarkets and warehouse clubs, specialty electronic stores, drug stores, cash and carry, home improvement among others. The company deals in a variety of products and services at lower prices than their competitors and immediate stores. Besides, it also ventures in e-commerce, mobile, and websites, financial, prepaid cards, money orders, wire transfers, bill payments, check cashing and fuel among others (Kneer, 2005).
Recently, the enterprise has been exhibiting problems raised by employees concerning the management of its different stores. One problem surrounds employees who are fed up due to authoritarianism in management, understaffing, and low wages, chronic understaffing which have led to the loss of customers.
