Healthcare Organization Strategic Plan Student’s Name Institution Course Name and Number Lecturer’s Name Healthcare Organization Strategic Plan A strategic plan is becoming increasingly significant for the sustainable management of healthcare institutions. This is due to the rising complexity, dynamics, and the need for strategic thinking (Huebner & Flessa, 2022). The strategic planning process allows healthcare teams to proactively evaluate the external and internal environment for emerging trends, events, and expectations (Huebner & Flessa, 2022). The resulting plan enhances the organization's ability to create a culture that supports the health and well-being of individuals and communities. This essay aims to develop a five-year strategic plan for a created hospital: - the New Caribbean Hospital. To develop this plan, one must understand the institution’s current state, its goals, challenges, strengths, market dynamics, and the wider healthcare landscape. Organization Summary The New Caribbean Hospital (NCH) is a public health facility that offers quality specialized medical care to patients across the country. The hospital is home to many referrals due to its advanced equipment and general services including open heart surgery, oncology, palliative care, maternal and children care, neurosurgery, burns management, critical care services, orthopedic surgery, emergency services, community health, diagnostic services, health insurance coverage, ophthalmology, renal services, and inpatient and outpatient care. NCH also facilitates training and research for nearby medical training colleges. Additionally, the institution works closely with the American Medical Research (AMR), American Red Cross, America’s Blood Centers (ABC), the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), and the US Department of Health and Human Services to ensure maximum quality care. The hospital’s mission is to optimize patient experience through innovative, evidence-based specialized care. Its vision is to be a world-class patient-centered specialized care hospital. Core values that guide the organization’s actions include integrity, accountability, professionalism, patient focus, equity, innovation, collaboration, and service excellence. Communities and the nation at large benefit from utilizing the NCH services as their medical home of choice. The population the hospital serves spans all ages in need of affordable and quality healthcare. The NCH provides care and services to everyone with healthcare needs regardless of their ability to pay. Current Events and Trends The NCH is experiencing significant trends and events that are impacting service delivery both positively and negatively. One of the recent events is the COVID-19 pandemic. The healthcare industry is one of the sectors most impacted throughout the COVID-19 pandemic (Hariyati, et al., 2023). As a result, the industry continues to struggle and adapt to new changes. This event wreaked havoc on the healthcare systems, causing a shortage of healthcare workers (Martin et al., 2023). This shortage resulted from the increased spread of COVID-19 leading to high demand for healthcare services (Hariyati, et al., 2023). The influx of patients at the hospital exceeded the number of available nurses, subjecting the existing nurses to burnout. This potentially reduced the quality of care delivery as healthcare providers were forced to work under pressure, creating room for medical errors. On the positive side, COVID-19 has accelerated industry trends that were already available but not widely accepted or used. An example of such a trend is virtual care and telehealth. When the NCH evaluates its future, the management considers how the hospital will increase service delivery through increased accessibility of the healthcare providers. Virtual healthcare will play a vital role in this change. The increased use of video calls with physicians indicates that health providers and consumers are embracing new methods of care delivery (Lee & Lee, 2021). Just a few decades ago, it was not possible to video call a physician. Now, most doctors' offices provide telemedicine options for patients. It is one of the fastest-growing integrations in the healthcare sector. This technology was extensively embraced in mid-2020 due to the pandemic as a requirement for alternative methods of interaction between patients and providers and in response to government directives to control the spread of COVID-19 (Bokolo, 2021). During the pandemic, governments implemented a stay-at-home order, limiting patients from seeking healthcare services. With telehealth, providers and patients could communicate remotely. According to Bokolo (2021), telemedicine eliminates the strain on facilities and lowers the need for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) by allowing healthcare professionals to interact with consumers through telecommunication. A study by Bokolo (2021) that the use of telehealth increased during the pandemic from about 11% in 2019 to over 76% in 2020. For rural dwellers, telehealth is a significant benefit. While physician access has been marred with logistics challenges in the past, virtual access can now stimulate initial consultations and annual checkups. More expansively, this technology has minimized hospital readmissions by providing quality preventive care and regular communications regarding questions like prescription refill requests and confusing discharge instructions without visiting the provider in the hospital (Chang et al., 2023). With the growing use of telemedicine, nurses who are in high demand but in short supply will consult with more patients. This is good news due to the projected annual increase in the demand for healthcare professionals. Therefore, virtual care increases primary care for isolated individuals, reduces travel costs, saves time, and improves public health. Another trend is Artificial Intelligence (AI). Its emergence in the healthcare industry has been groundbreaking, reshaping how doctors diagnose, treat, and monitor patients (Secinaro et al., 2022). This technology plays a crucial role in addressing some of the hospital challenges by automating various data management aspects including data processing, medical imaging, genomics, and completing electronic health records (EHR) (Chang et al., 2023). AI algorithms can assess EHR data to determine trends and patterns (Secinaro et al., 2022). This process improves documentation accuracy, streamlines workflows, and enhances clinical decision-making. AI is radically improving healthcare research and outcomes by producing more accurate diagnoses and allowing more personalized treatments (Chang et al., 2023). AI and automation are increasingly taking hold in the NCH. Studies show that AI is replacing traditional labor-intensive and time-consuming procedures with quick, remotely accessible, and real-time solutions for diseas...
