Ch. 12: Case Incident 1: Sharing is Performing
Description of the leader’s use of the leadership style in response to the situation
During the reign of chancellor Nicholas dirks of the University of California, he used an autocratic style of leadership. He would not involve his subordinates and shareholders in decision making, which lead to the crash of the chemistry college which he founded (Moseley, 2019). This led to his replacement by Carol T Christ. When Christ came into power, she responded to the situation by embracing the democratic style of leadership, which encouraged the use of shared leadership. They collaborated with the student vice president of the academic affairs in the university and Frances McGinley, which was aimed at reaching out to student’s ideas on what needed to be changed to better their studies. McGinley was of great help to Christ since they were able to gather all the required information because they held meetings with other overseers in the organization.
What makes the leadership style more effective for this situation?
Carol. T Christ decided to use a democratic style of leadership because she believed that in the 21st century, things are moving too fast with a lot of changes thus becoming very difficult to be handled by a single person. The sharing of leadership between different groups develops team productivity, team relationships, and people's attitudes and behavior. This form of leadership brings coordination and collaboration by balancing personal and mutual goals. Thus, it enables leaders to be more effective since it helps them to gather the necessary information while making decisions for the organization (Moseley, 2019). However, it is crucial to realize that this style of leadership is not only about delegation of power but about trying to bring all people’s ideas together to facilitate a rational decision-making process.
Compare and contrast the leadership styles the leaders chose
In this incident, leaders used two different styles of leadership which are autocratic and democratic leadership. The two forms have some similarities and differences. In the former method of administration, the manager has the full authority to make most of the company’s decisions without consulting his subordinates while in the latter style of leadership, the leader involves his stakeholders and other assistants in making resolutions in their organization (Dili, 2017). However, these leadership styles have a similarity since they both require decision making, which may have positive or negative consequences.
Why should the leadership styles differ for each case?
The leadership styles had to differ in the two scenarios because they involved different leaders who possess dissimilar personalities. Democratic leaders believe that requiring people's thoughts and ideas in their organization encourages innovation and creates lasting solutions to the organizational hurdles. On the other hand, autocratic leaders believe in exercising their ideas because they see them as the best (Dili, 2017). They also try to minimize the costs and time incurred during delegation. Thus both Nicholas and Christ applied their leadership styles in the organization since both of the styles work.
Ch.15: case incident 2: turbulence on the united airlines
Description of the leader’s use of the leadership style in response to the situation
United Airlines is one of the companies that exercise a bureaucratic form of leadership. In this kind of leadership, employees are supposed to follow a set of rules and regulations made by the united leaders. These rules create a lot of conflicts between employees and customers. An example of the rules includes an involuntary removal of a customer from a flight. This incident happened to Doctor David, who was to have a last-minute plane to go and meet a patient but unfortunately, he was forcibly removed from the flight (Regoli, 2015). This made him file a case in the law court. This style of leadership does not allow flexibility, and the subordinates have to follow the rules created by their seniors. However, the united managers decided to use this form of leadership since they wanted to minimize costs and boost the efficiency of decision-making.
What makes the selected leadership style more practical for a particular situation?
The form of leadership in this situation is effective since it encourages its employees to follow the company rules and regulations hence discouraging favoritism. Moreover, it supports the idea of hiring and recruiting specialized employees which ensures that every employee understands their duties, thus giving them a chance to apply their knowledge and skills. Secondly, the flexibility of this leadership makes it more effective since it does not provide its customers with an opportunity ...
