Chapter 7 is an eye-opener on the essence of anti-oppressive practice (AOP) in organizations. Reading the chapter has enabled me to appreciate that AOP is critical and in particular in public institutions. Individuals working in the public sector are tasked with a critical responsibility of making decisions that affect the whole society. In most cases, the public considers the individuals in the public sector as existing to maintain what has already been set. Public administration practitioners are bound by various laws, regulations, and procedures. Due to the complexity of the environment that these individuals operate in, it is challenging to consider them as agents of transformation. AOP in public administration is critical because it allows practitioners to apply their progressive values in their workplace (Morgaine & Capous-Desyllas, 2014). The application of AOP in the public sector is critical to bring the change the members of the public want. While I have not worked in AOP organization, this chapter has given me insights which I will use in my practice as a social worker.
The application of AOP in organizations facilitates transformation, increases the participation of the members and ensures inclusivity. Organizations that rely on oppressive practices are more likely to perform poorly. In the case of the public sector, such organizations will not meet the expectation of the public. However, AOP brings change within organizations which enables individuals to work towards achieving the goals and objectives of the various organizations. Additionally, AOP facilitates oppressive practices that enables all workers to be active participants. Members feel a sense of belonging in organizations which enables them to take part in the activities within the organization. Furthermore, AOP is critical for enhancing inclusivity. In most cases, oppression in organization has adverse effects on members especially those with special needs. Getting individuals with special needs to participate in organizations is challenging (Morgaine & Capous-Desyllas, 2014). For instance, organizations with poor resources would find it challenging to include members with special needs. However, AOP will push such organizations to allocate resources for the special group.
On the contrary, AOP in an organization leads to resistance and fails to appreciate the complexity of organizations. Fighting oppressive practices in organization can be met with resistance from members with contrary opinions. Such resistance may slow down operations or organizations. Furthermor...
