The primary goal of yoga is to give a person control of their life. Yoga exercises ensure that one can control their breathing. There are numerous benefits to practicing yoga. The main goals of yoga are physical health, mental health, social health, spiritual health and self-realization. Some of the mental benefits of yoga are that it reduces stress, sharpens attention and concentration of a person. It has also been known to increase body awareness and also calming the nervous system. Basic practices of the stretches in yoga are known to increase blood circulation in the body which cleanses the body from all the toxins which result from having unhealthy habits. While most exercises are aimed at increasing the physical build of a person, yoga aims at creating harmony between the mental and physical aspects of the body it also tons the body and strengthens bones and muscles (Schiffmann, 1996). Most exercises lead to tissue damage such exercises include lifting weights. Some of the social benefits of yoga are that it is known to have the effect of making a person feel connected to other people. Yoga increases the stamina of a person by maintaining a balanced metabolism (Singleton, 2010). At the moment I do aerobic exercises such as cycling, swimming, skipping rope and playing tennis. While these activities are aimed at increasing my physical strength, improving the volume of blood delivered to my muscles and increasing my stroke volume. None of them influences my mental health.
