The article “Poetry illustration and the Works of Ku K’ai-chih” by Hsio-yen Shih presents a discussion of the works of Ku K’ai-chih, one of the most famous painters before the T’ang dynasty (Shih, 1976). The article acknowledges that little is known about this painter in the West considering that most of what is known has been derived from the extensive coverage by Chang Yen-yuan. A brief description of his early life reveals that Ku lived a modest life despite the official position occupied by his father, who was a Chevalier-in-waiting to Yin Hao, a governor of Yang-chou in ca. 346. The main argument is that hardly any of Ku’s work has survived today and that details of his works are contained in anecdotes and other coverages by other individuals.<...
