1. What is a slum?
I consider a slum as the home for the poor people. A home for jobless people and uneducated persons. It is a place with poorly constructed dwelling structures, and there is limited access to social amenities. It’s a highly overcrowded place where people struggle to get their basic needs. Due to their sate of living, crime is rather adamant in slums. Generally, I view a slum as a home to people of the social class.
2. What three stories or statistics about life in the slums shocked you the most and why?
The statistic by UN-HABITAT shows that in 2005, over one billion people in the world were slum dwellers. The difference in the percentage of slum dwellers between developed and developing countries is what caught my eyes though. For developed countries, only about 6 percent of the urban population dwells in slums. In developing countries, the average population of urban dwellers living in slums about 78.2% with some states having as high as 99.4% of their urban communities living in slums. Considering the livelihood of the people in developing worlds, it isn’t a shock. However, I still lack to understand how so many people in developing countries live in slums, given that they have vast agricultural lands in their rural areas, vast resources at their disposal.
A story that shocked me is that of Mumbai, where I learned that most street-dwellers are families who have been there for sometimes some over six years. The earlier belief is that street dwellers were people who just moved to the city in search of greener pastures. However, the Mu...
