Virtue, utilitarianism, and deontological theories

Virtue, utilitarianism, and deontological theories Name: Institution: Every human has to live in a certain way or according to certain set principles so as to be at peace with the people he relates with. There are different ways in which different people in the society live in order to relate well with one another which explained in different ethical theories which are deontology, utilitarianism and virtue theories (Shafer-Landau, 2012). I this paper I will discuss the pros and cons of each theory as well how similar they are to each other. To begin with let me start by explaining each theory together with its pros and cons. Deontology theory is a hypothesis that explains that an individual does what he/she does because he/she believes is good or is the right thing to do. Individuals ensure that what they do is good and right before their friends or the people they relate with. The best thing with this theory is that an individual is able to produce consistent decision as they are based on personal set of duties. In addition, an individual according to this theory is able to evaluate his behavior and therefore able to act beyond the set requirement. However, despite the above stated advantages, it is difficult to rank individuals duties (Shafer-Landau, 2012). Additionally, not every possibility has set rules to account for thus leaving individuals with no guidance in making some moral decisions hence at time can be risky to an individual. Utilitarianism theory on the other hand deals with a scenario where certain actions are considered morally right for the benefit of a group of people. This theory mostly is concerned with what is right to a certain group of people and not individual behavior. The best thing about this theory is that it takes account to what is good in whole to a group of people and it gives guidance of what is expected from every person in that group (Tännsjö, 2008).
