The historical American spectrum Name Institution Date of submission The American political spectrum in the early 1930s was different to that in the 1990s. The changes mainly occurred in the 1970s and 1980s. The main change that took place was the conservatism took over liberalism. Liberalism involves an active government that upholds ethnicity and gender rights. Examples of such rights are movement’s rights, women’s rights among others. Before 1970s, this liberalism was mostly adopted because it mostly had favored the poor and working class and this was the achievement of many at that time (Graff 1987). Conservatism took place rapidly between 1970 and 1980 since many people took money as a priority. Conservatism involves limited governance, and it favored the rich and established corporations. This formation was mostly embraced since people’s success was measured by based on wealth. This was contrary to the past where a successful person was the one who fought for the society especially through activism. In America, the 1960s were years of reform and protest as the youths demonstrated against the war I Vietnam while African Americans fought for civil rights. Women were also demonstrated seeking for equal treatment in the society. During this period, everybody worked hard to help each other. However, in the 1970s things changed were exhausted on working together for common interests started spending much of their time on their own interests and making money (Burrows 1978). This change affected many things in many parts of America such as politics, culture and also education. For instance, many programs in the television during the 1960s and back were about serious social issues, an example was, ‘All in the Family’ which promoted equal rights in the society but after the change entertainment programs took a chance; for example, ‘Happy Days’.
