Purity is one concept that is often emphasized in Christianity. Christians are expected to lead lives that are free from sin. Being pure means that one does not indulge or succumb to the worldly pleasures but lives a life that is maintained or led by values such as self-control, love, kindness, love, gentleness, etc. In the two elegies, leading a pure life or the idea of a clean soul is included. In The Wanderer, the author tells his audience that “It’s good to guard your faith, nor let your grief come forth until it cannot call for help, nor help but heed the path you’ve placed before it” (Raffel, 110, 111). Here, the author is telling the readership to guard their faith and to not allow themselves to succumb to grief to points where they do not have the energy and resilience to guide themselves. In The Seafarer, the idea of a clean soul or purity is also expressed. At one point, the author notes “No harps ring in his heart, no rewards, no passion for women, no worldly pleasures, nothing, only the ocean’s heave” (Raffel, 44, 45, 46). In the above lines, a clean soul or purity is expressed through the fact that the persona has no passion for things of the world: neither the pleasures of the world nor women appeal to him.
Another Christian attitude or feature I find included in both elegies is the idea of the grace of God in both texts. Grace can be defined as unmerited favor...
