Natasha Singa’s article in the New York Times titled Can’t Put Down Your Device? That’s by Design explains how design qualities make it hard for people to put their devices down. The design qualities that make platforms and apps appealing to users also creates obsession, a phenomenon described by the author as “network effect”. Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Netflix, Tinder, and LinkedIn create in people a network effect, as there is always something to click on. Technology companies design their platforms with the aim of competing for the attention of users. There are, however, efforts such as Network Effect and Time Well Spent that promote a different approach, despite there being no incentive. Just like in the food industry, some technologists expect apps and platforms will give users more control and choices in future.
