I have often noticed that people almost abruptly change the moment they are speaking different languages. Their attitudes, their demeanor changes and they become different people. Well, for me, this was new and it took me a while to understand why people became different or seem different when they start speaking a different language. Till today, I believe that some languages cannot be used to express certain desires or for certain purposes. My native language, for example, is one that I find odd or difficult to use when am expressing my emotions or when am expressing my affections to someone. For me, it is sounds demanding and commanding and so, one might get the wrong impression if am using it to showcase even gratitude. Well, Menendez in her article Are we different people in different languages expresses some of her concerns that come about with multilingualism. In her article, she talks of how in some situations it took the initiative of a single writer to change the narrative of an entire crop of writers. I have heard the same experience and it took me a while before I started to use my native language to express certain emotions. This article will expound further on my bias towards the English language because of my perception that my native language is too official and often comes out as commanding or demanding.
