Hearing privilege refers to the unearned benefits, advantages, and entitlements that hearing people have and are not based on effort or talent. Instead, it is based on their membership in the normal social group and their ability to hear (O'Connell, 2021). Privilege, in this case, does not refer to having an easy life over hard hearing and deaf people but about self-awareness and appreciation of what one has.
Several examples of hearing privileges exist. The first is attending University education. People who can hear encounter little to no communication barrier when in a lecture hall or attending zoom classes (Wolsey et al., 2017). This boosts their academic performance. The deaf society members do not have such privileges. They depend on special arrangements to have interpreters that help them get what the professors are teaching. The second example is listening to a radio or a podcast. People who do not have hearing problems can take their earphones, put them on and follow whatever program is being broadcasted. This can be challenging for hard-hearing and deaf people.
