Source Evaluation: Credibility and Usefulness
ASSIGNMENT: For this essay, you will select one of the sources you have found through your preliminary research about your research topic. Which source you choose is up to you; however, it should be substantial enough that you will be able to talk about it at length and intricate enough that it will keep you (and your reader) interested. Once you have chosen a source, you will evaluate the source on two levels:
Credibility: Using the information in this unit as a guide, evaluate the source’s authenticity and reliability.
Usefulness: Using a combination of summary and analysis, examine the source on a critical level.
A. Assignment Guidelines
DIRECTIONS: The introduction of this paper will involve introducing the source. Provide the author, the title, and the context (where you found the source, where it was originally published, who sponsored it, etc.) Recall that a thesis statement states your position and an overview of your reasons. For this assignment, include a thesis statement stating whether your source is or is not useful for your research and why.
You will then go on to evaluate the source on two levels:
Credibility: Using the information in this unit as a guide, evaluate the source’s authenticity and reliability. Look at all the information that you can find about the source to establish the author’s (or sponsor’s) trustworthiness. Did the author include his or her own sources? Do you see the author’s credentials?
Usefulness: Using a combination of summary and analysis, examine the source on a critical level. Determine what the source’s purpose (thesis) is, and how it arrives at that goal. Examine its value to you and the project you are working on. How will it help you prove your own points? How does it address your research question? How might it come in handy to back up a claim (or address a counter-claim)? Are there any special features in this source? For example, does it use visuals or graphs? Is it current?
Finally, you will include a conclusion which shows your final assessments on both counts.
Keep in mind: Refer to the list below throughout the writing process. Do not submit your Touchstone until it meets these guidelines.

Source Evaluation
In my project, I aim to investigate how installing air filters in communities can prevent the adverse health effects associated with air pollution. My thesis statement is: funding the air filters project would benefit the community because air filters successfully control environmental pollution by removing smoke, dust, toxic gases, dirt, bacteria, aerosols, and other environmental pollutants, preventing adverse health effects. One of the sources that will be used to inform my project is Enhancing indoor air quality –The air filter advantage, which is a peer review article published in the journal, Lung India by Vannan Kandi Vijayan and his colleagues. Owing to its credibility and authenticity, I consider the source to be one of the essential building blocks of my project.
The article is published in the journal, Lung India, which is an official publication of the Indian Chest Society and the National College of Chest Physicians (India) dedicated to the field of chest and respiratory diseases. The journal is peer-reviewed indicating that every published article within the journal is reviewed by experts in the field for quality before its publication. Lung India publishes original research articles, case reports, review articles, brief communications, and letters to the editor in the field of pulmonary and critical care medicine. The journal aims to disseminate knowledge about the latest developments and research in respiratory medicine and other conditions affecting the respiratory system.
The authors of the article, Vannan Kandi Vijayan, Haralappa Paramesh, Sundeep Santosh Salvi, and Alpa Anil Kumar Dalal are experts in the field of respiratory diseases acting evidenced by their scholarly and research qualifications. The lead author, Vijayan is a practicing physician at Bhopal Memorial Hospital and a researcher in environmental health. Equally, the co-authors are renowned researchers in the field. In addition to their expertise, Vijayan and his colleagues (2015) enhance the quality of the information in the article by comprehensively citing their sources. The source has 45 peer-reviewed references that serve as the sources of the information that is presented by the authors in the review. Therefore, I had an opportunity to countercheck the information in the source to determine its authenticity.
The focus of the article is the potential application of indoor air cleaners and filters to improve indoor air quality ...
