Single Case Study Method and its Strengths and Limitations

Essay Instructions:

As you have learned during this class, a researcher can choose from many research methods. It is important to think of what is most needed from your study results when choosing what method to use as different research designs yield different data. The data obtained, in turn, influences the conclusions that can be made and the implications of study results for professionals working in the field.

In the Unit 9 Assignment, you will be given five scenarios to review and analyze. Using the Unit 9 Assignment Template, respond to the following for each:

Of the study methods discussed in class (single case, observational, survey, quasi-experimental, or single factor), which method would be ideal for the researcher to use? Why?

Based on the study method you identified, briefly describe how the researcher could structure their study.

What are strengths and limitations to the use of this study method?

Each scenario has a possible bias/error associated with it. Based on the bias/error listed for this scenario, how could this affect the study results, and how could a researcher work around this?

Unit 9 Assignment
Please review each scenario and then answer the corresponding questions for each.
Scenario 1
Dr. Geller has a new client that has a very rare disorder that not much is known about. She wants to conduct a study to learn more about the disorder.
* Of the study methods discussed in class, which method would be ideal for her to use? Why?
The single case will be the most effective method she can rely on as a doctor to focus on a single entity in her research.
* Describe briefly how she could structure her study.
The structure of the single case study research method will be based on a singular entity, and the subject is the patient with a rare disorder. However, several research analyses will be conducted on simultaneous occasions with different subsections under the same case research. The structure will integrate the open-ended questions followed by several interventions to determine the rare disorder. There will be random timing of the interventions initiated. Lastly, there will be a qualitative interview to determine the methodological assumptions of the subject under study.
* What are strengths and limitations of this study method?
One of the limitations of the research study is the difficulty in generalizing the results, as the research is based on one research subject (Muacevic & Adler, 2021). Thus, to enhance generalization, there need to be several research subjects who have a similar rare disorder as this will offer an in-depth understanding of the issue. Second, there is the issue of the methodological guidelines, which might be a concern to researchers (Muacevic & Adler, 2021). Some of the strengths that are associated with the methodology research study are that focusing on a single subject eliminates the lack of clarity that is viewed in group research. The second strength is that through the single subject, the doctor can conduct a detailed examination that will aid in monitoring the temporal relations and effects vital for research.
* What is observer bias?
Observer bias is a situation that happens when the researcher sways an inevitable outcome of the research with the intent to meet the researcher's expectations. However, blinded experiments are effective in eliminating observer bias.
Ї How could this affect the study results?
Observer bias is a situation that happens when the researcher sways an inevitable outcome of the research with the intent to meet the researcher's expectations. However, blinded experiments are effective in eliminating observer bias.
Ї How could a researcher work around this?
The most effective way that the researchers would work around this is by implementing blind experiments, as it is the most effective way to eliminate the issues that are associated with the observer bias.
Scenario 2
Dr. Hu wants to conduct a study to see if music therapy causes a reduction in compulsive behavior in patients with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
* Of the study methods discussed in class, which method would be ideal for her to use? Why?
Observation will be the most effective research study because this will be effective in identifying the effects of the patients under research with the disorder. Some of the crucial elements observed include anxiety, mood, and other patient behaviors.
* Describe briefly how she could structure her study.
The structure of the observational study will entail cross-sectional studies that will revolve around the patients under study (Lazar & Hocheiser, 2017). The research will discuss the patterns in the behaviors of the patients based on the music therapy sessions.
* What are strengths and limitations of this study method?
The strengths and limitations associated with the observational method concentrate on the cross-sectional study design. The first limitation associated with the disease is that one is prone to certain types of prejudice (Muacevic & Adler, 2021). Secondly is that there is no clarity effect and exposure. Lastly, it is also challenging to derive causal relationships. However, the strength associated with using the research method is that it is fast and cheaper. The second strength is that it is effective when conducting population-based surveys. Lastly, is that it can assess multiple outcomes.
* What is attrition as a source of study error?
Attrition refers to the state where some study subjects in the sample drop out of the research study.
Ї How could this affect the study results?
This can introduce bias in the research if the differing characteristics of the sample dropout do not correlate with the randomized groups. Thus, this can influence the result outcomes of the research experiment and retrieve a false hypothesis of the study.
Ї How could a researcher work around this?
Researchers can use several strategies to eliminate the study error, including communication, use of incentives, and use of questionnaires, behavioral monitoring, methodological interventions, and case management. The six strategies will aid in the reduction of the attrition cases during the research experiment.
Scenario 3
A teacher wants to collect data to see if scheduled movement breaks help her class to show less off-task behavior during lectures and tests.
* Of the study methods discussed in class, which method would be ideal for her to use? Why?
Observations will be an effective method as this will aid in quickly identifying the results of the experiment.
* Describe briefly how she could structure her study.
However, under the observation, the study design deployed is the correlation design, as the teacher will be correlating between two variables. The research will entail the description of the relationship between variables, the direction of the relations of the variables, steps to conduct the study, and the outcome of the study.
* What are strengths and limitations of this study method?
