Introduction
When studying spread of the plague there has been focus on transmission especially in Europe with the black rats singled out as the most likely to transmit the disease, but this is especially for the flea infected rats. Biting by insects they experienced (especially fleas) are the vectors and the Yersinia pestis bacteria is transmitted by the black rat (Rattus rattus). Research on the geographical spread of the diseases during in the Byzantine Empire under Justinian I (527-565 CE) provide insight on how the disease came to affected millions of Europeans. Adopting effective control measures, through identifying the cause and knowledge of the factors associated with the plague as well as intervention to assess the implementation of the control measures.
Materials & methods
Step 1: Choosing the Test subjects
The study was carried out in the Byzantine Empire and all the people who participated were within the boundaries of the empire. They were divided into two major groups for those showing signs of the plague and those without the symptoms. The experiment is carried out by experienced doctors, surgical experts and their assistants. Such experiments took place during the 6th century when the Justinian plague affected a huge proportion of the population in the empire and neighboring territories.
100 subjects will be chosen randomly to participate in the experiment whereby in Group A are those suspected to be infected with the plague and have reported flea bites Group B are those not infected with disease. Both male and female participants are recruited and aged 5 to 45 years. Those who are not infected are quarantined to ensure that they do not get infected. This was undertaken as there was increased movement in search of food and other tradable goods to the Mediterranean and there is a risk of those in the maritime industry getting infected and spreading the disease. If patients exhibited the symptoms of the disease after the experiment they would be excluded, and there was follow up to determine changes in symptoms. They are placed on quarantined quarters mainly based on the gender and gender.
Signs and Symptoms of the Disease:
Inflammation or swelling of the lymph nodes, fever and gangrene are the main symptoms of this plague, swelling mostly affects the neck, behind the ears, thighs and armpits. However, there are other symptoms such as
