SHOULD THE DRINKING AGE BE LOWERED?
The current drinking age should be reconsidered and lowered. Lowering the drinking age would make more sense because setting the drinking age at 21 does not imply that young people below 21 are not consuming alcohol. Recent discussions have claimed that the current legal drinking age of 21 is higher than most countries set at 18 years (Carpenter & Dobkin, 2015). This is even though a person is considered an adult by 18 years. Those opposing lowering the drinking age insist that the changes would increase the rate of bad alcohol behavior in society. The drinking age has been one of the major social debates in recent years. Each country has its different age limit for someone to be able to drink alcohol. People under the age of 21 have been perceived to be unable to handle alcohol, but this is not the case since most people between 18 and 21 can make sound decisions.
Lowering the drinking age would enable youths between 18 years and 21 years to drink in safe zones. This reduces the security risk involved when drinking in unsafe places. The drinking age of 21 years only means that they cannot drink in public, so they end up drinking in unsafe places away from the public (Patrick et al., 2019). It is evident that although the limit is 21 years, several youths between 18 years and 21 years consume alcohol. Since they cannot buy alcohol in public, they end up in unsafe places without being supervised, and sometimes they are arrested. Lowering the drinking age would reduce the number of youths arrested.
