James Gibson was born in the coastal city of Conway; South Carolina where he spent most of his childhood. Since his father worked as a manager in a large construction company, the family frequently moved to different places. In Norfolk, Virginia, James attended Pines Elementary School, and while a little over a year into his stay in the school, his father succumbed to death in a hotel while involved a business trip. The absence of the father figure affected James early life. His mother, Mary, went through a lot of financial crises in bringing him up as a single parent.
At the age of twelve years, James developed an intimate relationship with science fiction; it was from this relationship that he declared that he wanted nothing else apart from being a science fiction writer. Becoming frustrated with his poor academic performance, his mother wanted to take him to a boarding school. However, to the consternation of both his mother and teachers, James score poorly in mathematics, scoring 5 out of possible 150, while in the written section he scored 148 out of 150.
