Imagine that it is mid-February and your class had several substitute teachers for the first half of the school year. Your class is made up of students who are performing at varying grade levels, including some who are performing above grade level. A percentage of your students who are performing below grade level receive special education services. Additionally, a few of your students, who are performing on grade level according to achievement test results, are actually failing your class and experiencing chronic truancy.



Answer the following questions based on the scenario described above:



As the teacher of record in this scenario, what is your responsibility to ensure the academic growth of students in this classroom?



What specific strategies will you implement to meet the academic goals of every student while also ensuring they each feel supported in your classroom community?

Ans 1:
As the teacher of record, I would try to learn the reason for bad performance and truancy by performing on grade level according to achievement test results. I believe my responsibilities would be to ensure good performance by all the students in future, irrespective of their current levels of grades and understanding, along with making sure of their holistic development.
I would implement following strategies to meet the academic goals of each and every student:
Behaviour Management Planning: I would put increased emphasis on behaviour management as this would help understand students’ mindset, motivation drivers, and barriers to learning.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL): By implementing UDL, I would ensure utilization of a variety of teaching methods to remove any barriers to learning by students that have been underperforming.
Differentiated Instruction and Assessment: to ensure proper reflection and goal setting of students of varied levels of understanding and performance.
Use of a variety of instructional formats: using different mediums to present information and engage students to ensure students of all types are able to understand and develop interest in class.
Education Technology: I would also promote the use of education technology as use of audio and video aids leads to increased active participation in classrooms.
Solicit Student Feedback: Use of anonymous online surveys to gather students’ information on their knowledge, progress, classroom environment, faculties, school administration, personal issues, etc. so as to address their issues.
