The theory I have selected for this discussion is the rational choice theory. The proponents of this theory are Ronald Clarke and Derek Cornish. The theory entails all the factors of deterrence theory but adds on the benefits of crime and internal factors that might make one engage in criminal activities (Schram & Tibbetts, 2020, p 87). The rational choice theory assumes that the more people believe friends and family look down on their behavior, the more likely this person will be deterred. Additionally, the higher the expected payoff of the criminal activity, the less likely an individual will be deterred. I selected this theory because I felt it was essential to examine the aspect of internal factors that influence criminal behaviors and payoffs. Many people are unaware of these issues and need to be reviewed to create awareness.
