Recommend Research Strategies

Essay Instructions:

The Longman Writer:

Providing adequate supporting evidence for your ideas and arguments is an integral part of writing a persuasive essay. Supportive evidence may consist of examples from your own experiences. Often, however, additional research is necessary to provide supportive evidence for your essay.

As part of your Final Project, you conducted research for your persuasive essay. In this Discussion, you share research strategies that worked well for you during this process. In addition, you explain why these strategies were effective.

To prepare for this Discussion:

•Review Chapter 19, "Locating, Evaluating, and Integrating Research Sources" in The Longman Writer (pp. 465–506). What strategies can you employ to focus your research efforts? How can you use libraries and the Internet effectively in your research?

•Reflect on the research strategies that you found most useful when preparing to write your persuasive essay. How were these particular strategies useful? Which research strategies were most challenging, and why? Which research strategies do you think you need to work on to improve your research skills?

•Consider what advice you would give to a "new" student on how to conduct research. What strategies would you suggest for creating a strong, persuasive essay?

–2 paragraphs recommending three research strategies for finding evidence to support your persuasive essay. Be sure to include the following:

•Identify three research strategies.

•Explain why you chose these strategies.

•Explain how these strategies will help a writer with his or her research skills.

•Support your answer by citing examples from this week's reading.

Support your ideas by connecting them to the week's Learning Resources, and something you have read, heard, seen, or experienced.

The three research strategies identified are (i) correlational strategy, which measures 2 variables, typically as they exist naturally. It aims at describing a relationship between 2 variables without trying to explain the cause of the relationship (Nadell, Langan & Comodromos, 2011). I chose this strategy because of several advantages. It allows the researcher to find out if relationships hold across several cases; it uses variables that cannot be manipulated; and it disconfirms causal hypothesis, if there is no r2 there is no cause (Nadell, Langan & Comodromos, 2011). Correlational strategy will help a writer with her/his research skills in that it will help the researcher to look for relationships amongst variables which are consistent across many cases.
(ii) Nonexperimental strategy. Techniques of nonexperimental strategy include naturalistic observation whereby the researcher observes behavior within the natural habitat; case study whereby the researcher compiles information on some aspect of deterioration or development of a single group or a person (Nadell, Langan & Comodromos, 2011). Survey elicits responses to questions that pertain to variables of interest, and can be conducted through mail, phone or in person. Survey could be questionnaire, focus group or interview.
