Introduction
The United States has been marred with the issue of racism since time immemorial. People of color have been at the receiving end of some of the worst forms of racist acts. From the days of the Jim Crow law to the currently, mild and modest forms of racism, the people of color have indeed endured a time of turmoil. Talk of the white supremacism has indeed intensified today and with it more serious discriminatory acts. The sad bit is that racism is not restricted or governed by any laws of nature and hence it has managed to penetrate even the most delicate and important institutions today. Currently, talk of racism increasingly gaining ground in the universities has intensified. As if facing personal discrimination was not enough, students are currently being subjected to education racism. This is not only demoralizing but also a recipe for disaster because instead of nurturing a loving and cohesive young generation, the world is witnessing the development of potentially one of the most divided cohort. Studies and reports such as Jason Richwine’s (2009) IQ and Immigration Policy, have also helped to propagate the notion that the people of color are indeed second to the native white Americans. In his research, Jason reported that American Hispanics are less intelligent than the white Americans. His study was received with a lot of skepticism and according to Lindsey (2013), some even called it racist. However, this is not new to the people of color because some of them have been subjected to the same kind of treatment since their childhood days. The sad part is that the discrimination of students of the African ascent is even worse in the US. According to Lee (2015), these students suffer mainly because they are perceived to be “third-world” countries. However, it is essential to note that racism has a definite origin and if it is confronted, the world will end up being more divided than it is at the moment. Conversely, diversity also offers the world an opportunity to preach and motivate peace and cohesion. Schools can be perfect breeding grounds that can help the world and the US specifically to exert its influence as a leader by propagating cohesion and equality in the world.
Summary of the Sources
The sources that were consulted all approached the issue of racism from a different angle. Every author had a different view and tried to offer their piece of mind as clearly as they could. The authors are professionals in different fields and thus helped by offering views that were motivated by various experiences. The conclusive remarks of most them was that the US needs to move away from racism. People should not be discriminated based on their color, ethnic background, or on any other basis whatsoever. All the articles have provided sufficient evidence and base their findings on statistical data. Arguments such as racism leads to psychological issues in children among other effects have been raised and these pieces were indeed helpful in writing this article.
Research has sufficiently shown that people of color have indeed been the recipients of racist treatment. White supremacism has indeed been at the center of most of the arguments presented by researchers, for example, Heldreth (2016). In her journal, Heldreth says that white students often look down on their fellow black students. She blames the propagation of the white superiority complex phenomena which is simply a racist ideology that some white Americans use to esteem themselves over the people of color. According to Lee (2015), students from Asia, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East are often subjected to some form of discrimination while the same was not reported for students who are from Europe, Australia, and Canada. Additionally, lecturers have also been accused of propagating racism and discrimination in class which helps to justify the actions of the white students. A 2017 Los Angeles Times article reported that racism in class often makes it harder for students of African descent to cope up in school as they have to struggle to fit in and get the grades they deserve.
According to this Nishi et al. (2015) one cannot help but empathize with people of color and the effects that it causes to the African American students. As students, they have no choice but to Struggle for equal treatment in almost all facets of the learning institutions(Nishi et al. 2015). One of the writers says that this discrimination can sometimes result in mental issues due to the stigma that the black people have to undergo. Nishi et al (2015) also insists that even though the management in learning institutions claim that all races are treated equally, black students often complain of getting lower marks than they deserve. This is not always the case for white students and often happens in cases where the lecturers have the bias against African Americans. There is also the tendency to believe that people of color are not of the same intelligent quotient as the White students. Therefore, they are compelled to try harder to be accepted as members of the various clubs in the colleges. Nishi et al’s claims are also echoed by Singer who established a link between mental problems in students and racism (2017).
Aside from the above factors, a United Methodist Conference of 2012 reported that the people of color are also painted as criminals: “There is an increase in mass incarceration in the United States that disproportionately impacts people of color due to institutionalized racism, racial profiling, and mandatory sentencing.” While the above remarks often elicit huge debates, one cannot help but empathize with the peole of color.
