Fr. Lawton lamented in the first mass that the ‘journey to be oneself’ may be the riskiest based on his past experience and knowledge that this journey was unknown to those taking it. This is due to the fact that the people he was addressing were seasoned in their earlier life but had opted to move from this comfortable zone and hence would find it difficult to resist temptation of their former life. Another risk that lies ahead during college period is the risk of discovering ones abilities and maintaining them.
I was one time faced with a critical situation that involved my family members and I. My father was the bread winner and my mother was a housewife. My father promised to take me to a better school when I learned that he was cheating on my mother. Nonetheless, he vowed to stop paying my fees in case I disclosed this to anybody including my mother. However, these threats did not stop me from searching within myself on the need to disclose so as to avoid being dishonest to myself. The tug between revealing and not revealing haunted me more as days passed.
Surprisingly, as I was immersed in thought, instinct or other asked me to look to the left of where I was sitting. I could not imagine sightseeing my mother drowning the only family calf. Then, instantly I started asking questions on whether her action was deliberate or accidental. Deep inside I knew if I disclosed this I risked to have my mother being sent away.
