4. Think about an important point you want to make to someone. Maybe you want

to tell someone you love them. Perhaps you need to ask your boss for time off. Or

you want to get your neighbors to keep their dog from using your lawn as a

restroom. Whatever the message, however light or serious the tone, use the poetry

techniques from Lesson 1 to help you communicate it in the form of a poem. Use at

least two examples of figurative language and at least two sound devices (you

may choose rhyme as one of your sound devices). Bold print or highlight the

figurative language and sound devices in your poem to point them out to the

reader. This is a creative writing endeavor. Have some fun with it!

Define Us?

1. Do our differences define us? Write a paragraph in which you answer this

question and provide at least 3 reasons to support your opinion.

2. Provide at least two quotes from the play Romeo and Juliet to show that

the characters’ differences did or did not define them. (Include the page

number at the end of each quote)

3. Choose one of the main characters from the play Romeo and Juliet (Nurse,

Romeo, Juliet, Mercutio, or Tybalt), and think about how you would have

approached his/her situation.

A. What would you do differently? What would you do just as the character

did?

B. Write a modern-day scene based off that character and story. Will this

character’s differences define him/her? Or, will he/she expand beyond those

differences? You decide. It’s your story. This is a creative writing practice.
