Introduction
The ‘highest good’ is a concept that has brought about discussions for a long time. Various philosophers like Aristotle, Plato, Hobbes, Kant, Mill, and Nietzsche tried to define the concept in several ways. All the mentioned philosophers had their way of expressing what the ‘highest good ‘is according to their understanding. Critics and observers of the above philosophers have, however, continues to try and analyze works performed by the scholars to evaluate who did the best in communicating about ‘the Highest good’ or who performed better (Yu, 2016). However, it is no doubt that Plato and fellow Philosophers had their views at different times.
Aristotle seems to have gotten it right when he said that 'The Highest Good' is when one experiences happiness. According to Aristotle, happiness can only come when one has gotten down to action, which does not come easily in humans. In the case that an individual wants to attain something in their life, then one has to sit down and come up with a plan. However, Aristotle is of the view that humans are not gifted in the following processes. A good case is the secular world of today when people want to get rich, and some think it should be by way of the gun. Stealing and mugging then happen where an individual gets to steal to be rich. It should, however, be understood that such a step is wrong as one will not be happy as an act of planning and taking steps were not followed according to Aristotle (Dolan, 2018). Therefore, Aristotle was correct by saying that happiness is through actions, and he can be said to have gotten it right in explaining what the "Highest Good" is.
According to Plato, he tries to say that the highest good is having virtue in life, more so having the soundness of mind, wisdom, and righteousness. Plato continues to say that when the said virtues have been developed, then the moral apparatus will be accurate and tuned. It then becomes easy to have a clear mind and come up with correct choices in different circumstances. Moreover, it becomes easy to have sensory pleasures and have proper limits. In short, Plato is of the view that a virtuous person has correct balances and therefore lives happily (Baltez, 2017). In the secular world of today, many people are not virtuous in any way. Wisdom is not a part of many people, and that leads to many people not being able to make the right choices and reach their goals.
