Nursing informatics meaningful use

Essay Instructions:

Nursing Informatics Meaningful Use

Nursing informatics facilitates communication with all other clinical disciplines, coordinate patient care, and manage the information related to patient care and the nursing process (HIMSS, 2012). Nursing Informatics (NI) as defined by the Technology Informatics Guiding Education Reform (TIGER) (HIMSS, 2012) initiative was created to promote collaboration with nursing stakeholders to create a vision, action, and strategies to improve nursing practice and patient care delivery through the use of health information technology.

Interoperability is a significant component of healthcare informatics. It is the ability of two or more systems to exchange and use information. True interoperability requires that all parties adhere to interface and terminology standards. Nursing documentation must be a significant part of the Electronic Health Record (EHR).

Originally, Meaningful Use was defined as a complex set of capabilities and standards to be met by EHR use in a series of stages over several years/ may defray cost of implementing an HER. Today it is a body of specifications and standards designed to address the question of whether electronic health records (EHRs) are being "meaningfully used” (Chute, 2010). The term arises from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) (2009). ARRA legislation specified incentive payments to healthcare providers that promote the adoption and meaningful use of interoperable health information.

Proposed Stages of Meaningful Use:

Stage 1 (2011-2012) - Data Capture/Sharing

 Quality, safety, and efficiency

 Engage patients and families in their health care

 Improved care coordination

 Improved population and public health

 Privacy and security protections for PHI

Stage 2 (2014 -): Improved Outcomes- Continuous quality improvement

Stage 3 (2015 - ): Advance Clinical Processes -decision support tools and quality metrics

Application in Practice
Patience Documentation
Nurses use electronic health records to improve patient documentation and store valuable data on health care delivery guidelines. The contemporary healthcare practice is guided by patients' needs and history, where their data is collected and stored electronically. By documenting the patient's circumstances and exchanging that data electronically, medical officers can effectively administer and maintain quality care services to patients (Hermana & Mtshali, 2019). Also, documents are used by nurses to decide on suitable adjustments needed by patients.
Monitoring Devices
Nursing information systems improve health devices' monitoring to transform patients care and services delivery by nurses. Healthcare informatics enables the practical functioning of monitoring devices to ensure patient security, effective management, and intensive care of patients. For example, automated IV pumps have been advanced to control the dosage and drips administered to patients in the hospital. Furthermore, portable monitor devices allow medical officers to multitask the patient's conditions (Herriman, & Mishal, 2019). These devices are modified and contain notification alarms that notify nurses patients conditions when he is attending another patient.
Developing and Implementing Care Plans and Pathways
The information systems have helped improve the nursing workers in implementing and developing care plans and pathways. In hospitals, the implementations have been done to coordinate communication and information flow, service delivery, and review effective monitoring and attending of patients. For example, the use of predictive analytics for informatics in health care in validating predictive models to diagnose patients' diseases and digital computers in tracking different victim's data in hospitals (Electronic Health Reporter, 2021).
Retrieval of Previous Records and Imaging
Information systems have made it possible for nurses to improve retrieval of records and imaging, which forms the basis for diagnosing the patient history of illness. Nurses use improved predictive analytics to strengthen dialytic disease causes and mobility in patients. This is vital in typical data-retrieval capabilities that can extract data from patient illness history (University of Illinois Chicago, 2020).
Nursing Informatics in Administration
Staff Scheduling
The health information systems have great importance to administrators when conducting scheduling because it revolutionizes the whole realm of work among nurses to be more accessible. These systems help staff schedule the correct qualified number of required personnel to work in health units and follow protocols when attending to patients. Technological application in scheduling has modernized and easy planning for recruiting personnel, meeting their demands, controlling health affairs, and core staffing. For example, the use of health information systems has helped administrators to practical delegate duties indicating health unit they attend each time to treat patients. The shifting of nurses who work at day time and night has been improvised by applying technologies to ensure stall is well informed (Jane Vortherms et al., 2015).
Patient Satisfaction
Health information systems have made it possible to consider patients satisfaction by ensuring staff workers adhere to patients' rules, improve service delivery, and implement programs to offer high-quality patient care. For example, the service health units employ more workers and balance the cost of services to comply with customer needs and satisfaction.
Cost and Budget Analysis
Administrators have used the health information systems to make financial and budgeting issues for efficient services in hospitals. For example, the use of financial information systems computers to monitor and administer financial flow. Also, nursing informatics facilitates budgeting of daily hospital expenditure and creating payrolls for healthcare professionals anchored on a performance-based remuneration framework.
Monitoring Trends with Quality
Health information systems have helped administrators form bodies like pharmacy boards to oversee the quality standards of drugs prescribed to the patient through electronic detective machines that ensure efficiency in medical delivery to the patient (Jane et al., 2015).
Nursing Informatics Application in Education
Informatics and Technologies in Education
