Introduction
Racism refers to discrimination or prejudice against a person of a different race by another person from a superior race. Racism encompasses a belief that particular groups of people have different behaviours and moral virtues that can be divided regarding the superiority of one race over the other. Racism has been an existing way since colonialism in the United States. Racism emerged in cases where the white Americans were given social privileges and rights, while the same was denied to the other minority races like Hispanics and African Americans living in the United States. The white Americans enjoyed privileges like voting rights, education, and land acquisition, among others. The minority races were discriminated and excluded in these privileges.
Michael Jordan on Racism
Michael Jordan, former Chicago bulls star on racism has promised to donate $100 million to promote racial equality for Black Americans (Conway, 2020). This is after the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis by some police officers. George Floyd was a Black American, and his murder was as a result of racism. Michael Jordan claims that Black Americans have been mistreated and discriminated for many years. He added and said that Black Americans could not take it anymore, being mistreated by the White Americans. Jordan said that he believes that education will help Black Americans to be competent in the United States. He also marked out that education will also help people to recognize and realize at early stages that racism should be fought against and should not be tolerated (Conway, 2019).
In the article by Conway, there are several things people can learn. Conway Tyler uses appeals to reason (logos), whereby he presents the fact that George Floyd, a Black American, was killed by four White American police officers. From this statement and a fact, the author wants the audience or readers to understand and conclude on the concept of racism. Also, Conway uses appeals to emotion (pathos) where he says that in a video George Floyd was begging for his life while bleeding from his nose. This was happening after Derek Chauvin, one of the police officers knelt on Floyd’s neck for around nine minutes. These incidences automatically win the readers emotions concerning the unruly acts. The reader will start developing a negative attitude towards racism. Conway uses appeals to credibility by using direct quotations of Michael Jordan such as “we have been bitten down (as African Americans) for so many years. It sucks your soul …”, and also, “my parents always stressed that education as to how you best bond with other people…”. These quotations improve the credibility of the information tabled by Conway.
Critique for Racism
Racism has several implications in society, which makes the topic worth discussing. Racism has been an unwelcoming behaviour and influence that the people from the minority races experience from childhood (Macedo et al., 2019). Racism tends to influence people’s attitudes and behaviours which result in an imbalance in issues concerning the distribution of resources and power among the races. Racism leads to oppression of the minority race. Racism affects people’s emotions negatively and can result in depression. This at the latter will affect the health and well-being of the victim (Stanley et al., 2019). In the recent past, there have been several cases of racism which have been recorded all over the United States as well as worldwide.
However, some people benefit from racism and are the reason as to why racism has not yet come to an end. Those who are responsible for distributing resources benefit from being racists, and they are mostly White Americans. The White people gather a lot of wealth from discriminating the Black people. This is by giving the poor Black people little wages and salaries. As a result, the White Americans gain at the expense of African Americans. These White Americans claim that there is no neutral and they feel that they deserve the best because they are the real natives of the land. This makes the White Americans feel that African Americans deserve nothing better while in the foreign land.
