One of the most profound consequences of the France revolution in 1848 was the renewed efforts to improve education. Many reformers viewed education as the hope for a renewed society. Madeleine Sophie Barat was among the few reformers who used her religious calling to push for a renewed society through education when she formed the society of Sacred Heart.
Having lived in turbulent times, in the wake of the French revolution, both the rich and poor suffered before normality returned to France. Coming from a privileged family Sophie received a good education, but felt grieved that the same opportunity was being denied to other young girls. She devoted her life to educating young girls whether poor or rich (Raftery, 2014). Sophie was a religious woman who believed in the existence of God.
