Literature Review, the Sources Used, and the Elements for Inclusion

Essay Instructions:

Understanding the literature review is the foundation of academic inquiry (Xiao & Watson, 2017). The literature review grounds your topic of interest with academic historical research from previous authors. This is where the saying of ‘Stand on the shoulders of giants’ comes into your research. Standing on the shoulders of giants could be as far back as Socrates and his philosophies or Newton and his determination of the universe. Every area of study has giants or ‘thinkers’ that have come to be accepted as reliable sources to follow. In this assignment, you will delve into the sea of knowledge to uncover the complexity and understanding of reviewing the literature and developing your knowledge in writing.

It is also imperative to include current literature and evidence in your literature. A general guideline is for approximately 85% of the literature review should include works literature published within the past five years. Evidence supporting a problem should be as current as possible.

In most cases, a literature review shows the comprehension of academic works on various topics in any context. The activity involves identifying current knowledge and its applicability to the topic under investigation. The primary reason for doing so is to contribute to the field of research while providing evidence and strengthening one's position. This work explores the meaning of literature review and aims to investigate the sources used, the essential elements for inclusion, and the means of obtaining valid information for informed conclusions.
A Literature Review
A literature review scrutinizes already researched specific areas or topics (Paul and Criado, 2020). The process involves the analysis of scholarly materials, survey documents, and other sources that are significant to a particular area of research, issue, or theory. Therefore, it gives a summary, in-depth evaluation, and description of the relevant materials per the research problem under investigation. Furthermore, the literature review intends to provide a list of other works that have been exhausted while conducting research on a specific issue and express to the target audience how the study fits in the general context of research.
A literature review also serves to spot research gaps and determine the future course studies should take. For instance, summarizing and analyzing past research will help create familiarity and insight into current investigations. Besides, a literature review will make one discover the already done research and what is yet to be discovered concerning the main issue. Generally, a literature review points out areas for new research, ends conflicts among previous investigations, identifies gaps, and finds a study in the context of already present works.
Why a Certain Type of Literature is Used
A specific type of literature may be used to prepare a summary and analysis of the existing research. For instance, it might be employed to give background information on the central theme, support an argument, or aid in explaining concepts of the research. Ideally, a particular type of literature might apply because it contains a significant authoritative source of information or can be easily accessed compared to others (Xiao, and Watson, 2019). For example, scientific research papers are worthy of helping create the review because they give crucial background information concerning the topic, support an argument, and provide more clarification on a point made. Scholarly books can also be employed in preparing a literature review as they could offer authoritative evidence on the research theme. In addition, the materials could be used as they are the most available data source. Other literature may be used to give an official perspective regarding the concer...
