Language and culture are both believed to be intimately related. The two are special to the human race, bringing about the performance of sociological, memetic, as well as anthropological study. Linguistic learning is also encouraged in many nations to enhance deeper understanding of language use and differences across cultures. It is important to note that concepts and words differ across languages and even dialects, while the comprehension of vocabulary offers us an enhanced cultural understanding.
The words and concepts used in one cultural setup are likely to differ greatly with another culture. This difference comes in as the concepts and words symbolize the cultural beliefs of the speaker, and according to the unique features of each language (Chapter 1, pg 4). In addition, all languages are equal and none is inherently superior to the other, as each is perfect for its specific function. It is crucial to put into consideration that the language concepts and words may diverge according to an individual’s cultural beliefs because all languages have exceptional concepts. Languages usually reflect what is culturally important to the people speaking it. In linguistics, the language building blocks comprise of phonemes, which is the language sounds. Other variables include the smallest significant language units, phrases, sentences, words, and clauses, known as morphemes as well as discourse, which is the unit of language. However, some aspects of language may be common in two or more languages, like in an instance where the long and short “a” sounds is used in both English and Hindi (Chapter 1, pg 4). In addition, concepts such as death, birth, honor, money, as well as marriage are usually shared across languages.
