Key Terms in the Analects of Confucius: Li, Ren, Junzi, and Dao
要求: The Analects are a unique and often puzzling text. The Confucius scholar David Jones suggests that the best way to approach reading the Analects for the first time is to think about the key terms/concepts around which the text is structured, and to consider what the terms mean and how they relate to one another. As such, I'd like you to focus on four key terms/concepts while you're reading: li, ren, junzi, and dao.
For your reading questions, I'd like you to pick one chapter that helps illustrate or deepens your grasp of each term, and briefly explain how and why it does so. For example, if we were focusing on filiality (which is another good term to keep track of after the four noted above), you could refer to 4.20, and give a brief explanation of how the three year period highlights the deep respect and honor due one's parents in the name of filiality.
