Relevant Skills and Requirements
To guarantee efficient and effective delivery of the functions and services outlined above, the ideal candidate should possess the following qualifications.
Supervision and human resource management skills: the Restaurant Manager will be responsible for supervising and managing the hotel's working staff (Andrews, 2012). He should demonstrate the ability to relate well with other employees by motivating them to maintain high quality standards in terms of food preparation and serving customers.
Excellent communication skills: most of the candidate's functions will involve communicating with customers and junior employees. Accordingly, he or she will have to be a good communicator as he/she will be dealing with different personalities and in different situations.
Budget preparation skills: like any other business, the hotel runs within a planned budget. The restaurant manager will be responsible to allocate resources to all departments (Andrews, 2012). Skills and knowledge in budgeting will be necessary to ensure that resource allocation is balanced and some departments are not overlooked or experience shortages while resources are wasted on others.
Planning skills: the ideal candidate will be overseeing a business that runs on daily schedules and routines. He or she should possess good planning skills to determine what tasks to be completed at what time, identifying effective strategies for completing the tasks, and anticipating challenges and ways to overcome them.
Excellent inter-cultural communication skills: the hotel serves a diverse clientele base in terms of geographical and ethnic origins. London being a famous destination for tourists, businessmen, and travellers from different parts of the world, the restaurant manager should possess fare knowledge of the world's cultures and how to interact with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. Similarly, the hotel employees workers from different ethnicities, and the restaurant manager should know how to interact with an ethnically diverse working staff on a daily basis.
Flexibility: the hospitality industry is one of the few business industries that are easily affected by changes in other areas of the economy and political events (Kapiki, 2012). For instance, political tensions and economic crises can create a shortage of travellers as well as those who can afford to dine in high-end restaurants. In this regard, the candidate should anticipate such situations and make necessary adjustments in relation to the demand for our services.
Critical thinking and problem solving skills: although the restaurant manager will be working under a senior manager, he or she will have autonomy to make low-key decisions that do not require the approval of senior management. Similarly, the restaurant manager will respond to emergency cases for which there will be no time to contact and get the guidance of his or her superiors. Accordingly, the candidate should demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving skills as they are necessary to the effective management of the hotel's staff and day-to-day activities.
Teamwork skills: One important aspect of the hotel industry is that employees in various departments work as a team. For example there are waiters, cleaners, delivery workers, and cooks in different sections. The restaurant manager will ensure that workers in different sections work as a unit to ensure i efficiency and productivity levels.
Working Experience
The ideal candidate should have two years' experience working in a similar capacity in the hospitality industry, preferably a 3-star category hotel or above.
The condition for experience is dictated by the fact that there is no time to train the ideal candidate in the relevant knowledge and skill areas. Consequently, we require someone who is ready to fill l the advertised position as soon as possible and assume the designated responsibilities immediately. Experience is also an advantage to the potential successful candidate as he or she will be fitting into a familiar environment, and therefore will need a short time to adjust to the daily business activities of the hotel. Thus, practical experience and business acumen in the hospitality industry are very essential for candidates applying for this position.
Minimum Academic Qualifications and Training
The ideal candidate for the position should be a holder of at least a Higher National Diploma in business studies, hotel catering, or hospitality management. These courses are regarded to offer the relevant knowledge and skills needed to work in the hospitality industry (Page, 2003).
