Nurse: In the med-surg unit, we use the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system- Epic, barcode medication scanners, wireless vitals machines that upload directly to the EHR, and secure messaging apps on hospital-issued smartphones. Interviewer: How does the technology you use enhance internal and external communications between the interdisciplinary team (i.e., pharmacists, technicians, physicians, advanced medical care providers, and nurses)? Nurse: It improves communication greatly. Everyone involved in a patient’s care sees real-time updates. When a physician enters an order, the pharmacist verifies it, and nurses are notified immediately. The secure messaging system also helps us contact providers quickly in urgent situations. Interviewer: Describe the process from the time an order is written until the time the order can be carried out? Nurse: After a provider writes the order in the EHR, the pharmacy reviews and approves it. Nurses then receive a task notification. Before giving the medication, a nurse scans the patient’s ID and the drug using our barcode system. The system confirms everything matches and logs the time and the nurse’s name automatically. Interviewer: What are some of the processes or policies implemented to ensure patient safety? Nurse: We use barcode scanning, verify two patient identifiers, do double-checks for high-alert medications, assess fall risks, and follow structured shift handoffs. Interviewer: What challenges, related to the use of technology and electronic information, have you experienced? In your practice, what solutions have you implemented and/or changes have you made to address these challenges? Nurse: Alert fatigue and system downtimes are common. We have been trained to prioritize alerts and follow downtime protocols. Interviewer: How has informatics helped and/or hindered patient education?
