Impact of Weight Loss on Incidences of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus
Gestational diabetes mellitus, also known as glucose intolerance, is a type of diabetes that occurs in expectant mothers from the age of 18-35 years and affects around 7% of pregnant women globally. GDM is associated with maternal and childbirth complications, increasing the chances of a caesarian section. This condition is mainly associated with obesity, with a higher body mass index increasing the risk of cardiovascular complications and could lead to type 2 diabetes mellitus and hypertension. Patients should lose weight to reduce the probability of developing this medical problem. Physical exercise consisting of low aerobics supervised by a certified trainer has been shown to reduce the incidence of GDM by increasing glucose metabolism (Care, 2019). Regular exercise during gestation reduces the risk of GDM and improves maternal and fetal outcomes.
A 12-week exercise program supervised by a certified trainer should be carried out to establish the impact of physical exercise and monitored weight loss on the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus and complications during childbirth. This program should be safe and effective for expectant mothers with GDM. A control group with the same condition is introduced and given standard care of dietary counseling and glucose monitoring to ensure sufficient glucose control and reduce maternal complications. This control group compares the exercise program on GDM to establish the impact of physical exercise on incidences of GDM. The outcomes of this program include birth weight, maternal weight gain, and fetal and maternal progress indicators. The assessment of both the intervention and control groups should be conducted within 12 weeks from the common center, with proper follow-up until after delivery.
