Impact Of Technology In The American Workplace
America has the most dynamic and entrepreneurial workplace globally, with a high concentration of innovative companies and a strong growth capacity. This is due to the country’s leading edge in technology, which is increasing the rate at which organizations can improve their operations (Hötte et al., 2022). Emerging technology has enabled the American workplace sector to witness discoveries and improvements. Technology plays a significant role in shaping today’s American workforce. It has profoundly changed how employees work and their work quality. Nearly every industry in America is utilizing technology to increase efficiency and productivity. Technology can automate processes, allowing organizations to do more work with fewer human errors. Business technologies such as computers, social networks, accounting software, video conferencing, and customer management applications have facilitated communication, accelerating quick decisions.
Technology has also streamlined tedious and wasteful processes while increasing productivity. However, some people consider technology harmful to the workplace. Technology problems in the American workplace are evident in the labor market due to the possibility of people losing jobs to automation, being disrupted when working and lacking appropriate skills to handle technology-related tasks (Dodel & Mesch, 2020). Technology has also facilitated innovations that create new job opportunities requiring advanced skills. Therefore, the impact of technology on the American workforce remains diverse. Whereas technology has numerous advantages, its disadvantages cannot be overlooked. The bottom line is that the disadvantages of technology neither outweigh its advantages nor prevent workplaces from incorporating it in daily operations.
Technology has significantly impacted the American workplace in many ways. Firstly, it has improved communication and interaction due to the introduction of various communication tools, including cell phones, smartphones, email, social networking, and video conferencing tools (Chui et al., 2017). These tools have made sharing information at work and attending workplace meetings easy. Employees can now attend meetings virtually using video conferencing tools like Skype. In other words, technology has encouraged more deliberate, efficient, and collaborative communication in workplaces. This has increased decision-making because organizations use various communication tools to quickly bring employees, subordinates, and management on board (Dodel & Mesch, 2020). In the same context, technology has increased efficiency and productivity by enabling remote work. Emerging technology has allowed employees to work from home. Working from home has benefited both employers and employees. It has improved work-life balance and reduced commuting costs and other expenses. It has also reduced absenteeism, resulting in improved performance and productivity.
Secondly, technology has made business operations more productive. Nowadays, American workplaces incorporate business productivity software into their operations (Wilburn & Wilburn, 2018). This software provides many tools to address the challenges of implementing daily strategy. It allows managers to track progress easily and offer immediate reinforcement to keep deadlines and performances on the track.
Most importantly, technology has encouraged innovation and creativity. Various innovations have resulted in the development of automation systems that are more effective in performing specific tasks than humans (Ford, 2015). For instance, technology has led to the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) that many workplaces have adopted. Artificial intelligence is used in various American sectors, including manufacturing, healthcare, business, education, telecommunication, banking, and aviation. AI has been used to automate various tasks, guaranteeing efficiency and increased production at work. As Wilburn & Wilburn (2018) put it, ''Technology, especially the interrelationships of AI, big data and internet of things (IoT), is accelerating its ability to help workplaces do more with less and provide better results’’.
AI reduces human error and creates room for making corrections instantly. Workplaces that have adopted AI in their operations have witnessed increased productivity and profitability since AI performs high-value tasks at a pace and scale that humans cannot match (Ford, 2015). When humans perform such tasks, they tend to take a long period to complete, costing organizations more money. The profits made would be lesser than the profits made through automation. Ford (2015) argues, ‘‘organizations must adopt AI and robots to stay competitive because machines can do jobs faster and cheaper than humans.’’
Despite the numerous benefits of technology, critics have argued to th...
