In the contemporary world online activities change how people interact, and the use of the internet has had tremendous changes on advertising. One of the reasons for the phenomenal growth in internet use in the media industry is the low cost of internet advertising in comparison to traditional advertising methods. Nonetheless, it remains to be seen whether the internet will have a long -term negative impact on the media industry. This is because advertisement revenues have fallen with growth in use of the internet advertising (OECD, 2010). At the same time there is increased competition on provision of news content between traditional news media and web based news broadcast.
The main goal of internet advertising is to influence potential buyers like in traditional media there are differences. One of the main advantages of the internet over traditional media is the ability to reach out to many people at the same time. Consequently, online advertising can focus on the taste and preferences of customers. Thus, through use of the internet advertisers are able to monitor the effectiveness of their advertising campaign. The growth in social media presents opportunities for marketers to exploit online advertising (Bakshi & Gupta, 2013). In essence, advertisers are able to differentiate different market segments and they can focus on their niche market more effectively unlike traditional media. However, the advertising campaign through use of the internet requires more personal interaction and the interaction occurs on a one on one basis.
Internet advertising presents opportunities to marketers as more and more people embrace the World Wide Web. However, unlike traditional media consumers tend to switch their news source and may view advisement as distractions. In the traditional media there are fewer constraints that would distract consumers as they mostly focus on information from one source.
