In Ibsen's Hedda Gabler, the main character Hedda Gabler/ Tesman grows up in a 1890’s Norwegian society where there is strict conformity to rules adherence to strict discipline. Hedda Gabler is relevant even today as the play highlights how women are trapped in marriages to conform to societal expectations. This includes even western women, but more so women from immigrant backgrounds where there is pressure to conform.
