The role of subsistence and surplus economies in Greek expansion and contraction during the archaic age, dark ages, and mycenean civilization cannot be overestimated. This paper seeks to put these roles into perspective. Greek expansion and contraction between dark ages and archaic age faced several ups and downs which were contributed by both subsistence and surplus economy (Lianeri, 2011).
Subsistence economy in Greek ensured that groups obtained the life necessities through their own provision. During dark ages, wealth in Greek was not measured by currency, but with natural resources. This kind of subsistence economy led to the expansion of Greek between archaic age and dark ages. On the other hand, surplus economy during these periods had positive effects on Greek expansion due to the more assets compared to liabilities owned by groups. Factors such as migration, trade and mobility contributed to Greek expansion (Kinzl, 2010).
Mycenean civilization resulted in population growth. The cramped home spaces derived inadequate explanation. During the start of the archaic period, political and economical dynamics were produced by spirit of competition that existed among concepts of city states in Greek, frequently kingless, and striving to have their spheres of economic influence expanded. Throughout the expansion period, usage of coins flourished in the entire Mediterranean Basin (Lianeri, 2011).
In conclusion, both subsistence and surplus economy played a role in Greek expansion and contraction during the archaic period, dark period, and mycenean civilization. Natural resources determined the existence of wealth, with insufficient explanations for population growth during these periods leading to Greek expansion. During these periods, dark ages, certain citizen classes were called upon to engage in enterprises. The founders of the colony were honored even after their deaths.
