It demands leaders demonstrate values that demonstrate a genuine sense of responsibility for diverse communities, including making ethical choices and demonstrating cross-cultural sensitivity. This paper connects the concepts of global citizenship and cultural humility and argues that global citizenship helps address potential conflicts between a leader’s values and those of their firms or communities. In addition, the paper discusses the role of a leader at different levels of responsibility and how the lessons learned in this course can influence future practice. Reflection on a Leader’s Responsibilities For leaders, the intersection of global citizenship and cultural humility is based on their focus on the common good, such that any decision they make should incorporate a global lens. Leaders who want to demonstrate both cultural humility and global citizenship should embrace a genuine commitment to ethical responsibility, thus making decisions for the greater good and recognizing that the globe intersects on various issues, including equity, environmental stewardship, and sustainability, irrespective of one’s cultural background (American College of Education, 2024). Leaders can navigate imminent conflicts between their personal values and those of diverse communities or organizations they lead by embracing the values of global citizenship. The global leader is then able to interact with individuals and communities of diverse backgrounds, take on projects, and create opportunities that are tailored to ensure the success of the broader global community. A leader who has a global citizenship mindset is unlikely to prioritize their personal interest over the common good of the communities they serve. A globally minded individual considers the environmental, economic, social, and political implications of their actions instead of simply focusing on their interests (Belabcir, 2024). The issue selected for the matrix entails an ethical dilemma related to channeling the company’s waste into the nearby river or incurring more financial costs to discard the waste safely, without inflicting harm on the community. At the personal level, I accepted that the company is struggling financially and I need to make a decision that serves the long-term and sustainable needs of both the company and the community. With respect to the professional level of leadership, I have to be a role model and act in ways that encourage others to emulate my decision when faced with similar circumstances in the future. At the local level of leadership, the decision that I take should demonstrate respect for state laws and other stakeholders. Leadership is about serving the shared interests of specific groups as part of a commitment to demonstrating good governance at the local level.
