Abnormal personality development typically involves patterns of behavior, emotional regulation, and cognition, which deviate from societal norms and lead to functional impairment. Still, personality disorders such as emotionally unstable traits create significant challenges for mental healthcare and society (Möhler, 2022). However, abnormal personality development specifically incorporates the lifelong pattern of feelings, behavior, and thinking that lead to disruption of the lives of individuals. On the other hand, personality development reflects variations in individual thoughts, behaviors, and feelings. Besides, Möhler (2022) reveals that personality disorders present significant challenges not only for society but also for psychotherapy and psychiatry.
Although normal personality development occurs naturally throughout life, it can be modified with the help of intentional efforts. Even so, key distinctions include normal personality development, which reflects psychological well-being and adaptability, while abnormal personality development is characterized by maladaptive traits disrupting functioning. (Cummins, 2017). Understanding these key concepts is significant for diagnosing and providing help to medical professionals with treating and managing different disorders.
Additionally, personality development particularly progresses through the interaction of environmental, genetic, and social factors. Abnormalities increase due to several factors, which include neurochemical imbalances, trauma, and genetic predisposition. For example, a chronic brain disorder, schizophrenia, is typically characterized by delusions, disorganized thinking, and hallucinations.
