The battle over drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) is a raging political controversy. Republicans support the drilling and are closely supported by delegations from Alaska, politicians, and stakeholders in the energy sector. The opposers of the drilling are environmental groups, Democrats, and certain groups living in Alaska. There is a strong belief from both groups that they can win the battle.
The supporters argue that recent discoveries and successful execution of certain projects indicate demand and technical ability to drill within the Artic. Moreover, the revenue from the oil and gas development is an essential income source for Alaska, which has experienced many financial challenges (Patterson, 2017).
