Select two photos that describe your biographical background as it relates to the environment. Citing a minimum of 2 required readings (from week 2), explain how the photos are representative of your environmental biography. In addition, describe the specific learning outcomes you seek to gain from this course. Students will provide short presentations in Zoom breakout rooms during class (600 words).

FAQ:
1) What is an Environmental Biography?
It is a description of how you have experienced the built (buildings, parks, sidewalks, freeways, anything human-made) and natural environment (waterbodies, green spaces, trails, wilderness, anything that is natural) in your daily life (can include work experience and education).
Choose 2 out of the 3 readings from Week 2 that resonate with your lived experiences, particularly when you think about the environment and the space you grew up/lived in/worked at/where you went to school.
It could also be your experience from other times and walks of life such as traveling, experience moving from one neighborhood to another, and so on.
2) You should ideally take pictures because these spaces are what you experienced. Unless these are about some prominent landmark such as the LA County Museum of Art, for which you can find images online, you should use pictures that best describe your experience in those spaces (cite your source).
3) 600 words is the minimum word count for the entire assignment.

Understanding how one’s environment is constructed and integrated with the natural aspects of our world has essential functions in forming our own personal views and experiences. Accordingly, environmental biography is profoundly influenced by two iconic locations in New York City: The High Line and Madison Square Park, which are the project's main subjects. I chose these two because they really piqued my attention when I was visiting New York due to their beauty amidst a sprawling urban landscape. Although I do not have a photo of them myself, the photos I will attach are of prominent landmarks inside and outside New York City. All in all, I believe that these spaces indicate my interaction with the environment and symbolize my personal and broader socio-environmental narratives.

The High Line

The High Line, a linear park developed on a disused elevated railway track, is the perfect example of the transformative power of urban green spaces. Being a place I often go to, it is the perfect combination of natural and built environments. The place is a perfect model of how urban redevelopment can be done in a way that considers environmental sustainability and community engagement. However, what piqued my attention was how it was designed to accommodate people seeking refuge, calm, and even a sense of community amidst the complexity of the cityscape. Walking along the High Line, I frequently feel like I am in a green paradise amidst the urban sprawl. Thus, I get a feeling of peace and solitude that is missing from the city.
In one of the articles written by Layzer (2020), the author pointed out that in the environmental context, the decision-making process is complex and involves economic development, environmental preservation, and social equity. Upon personally experiencing a walk on the High Line, I realized that this landscape is an example of successful environmental policymaking in which the adaptive reuse of urban infrastructure improves the ecological value and the community's well-being.
