Academic writing is a form of writing that is highly specialized, and is not handled just by anyone who is not aware of how it is done. Academic portrays the following characteristics which make them different from the writing done by students: It is collaborative meaning that a study on a particular topic is done through looking into secondary data already obtained by others, the researcher uses many of the secondary data, and finally uses the information from those books or journals to produce a final document. In the case of science experiments, observations made by several individuals are used to derive the final findings. In addition, academic essays vary in length; some academic essays are long while others are short. For example, in the scientific study, preciseness and exactness of an experiment is required, hence, making them short. Social science based research are long since they are discursive. Furthermore, academic writers are mostly dependent on already existing materials. Most do research online while others use books and journals. Documentation of writing by giving citations also characterizes academic writing. Moreover, academic writing is considered expository rather than argumentative as authors` opinions are based on their research findings. . Additionally, academic writing is not ornamental meaning as it does not employ the use of figurative language.
