Foreign aid can be described as the transfer of resources either in the form of goods, services or even capital from a country say A to country B. There are several ways of distributing foreign aid. For instance, the most common forms are food aid, humanitarian and military assistance (Brautigam & Knack, 2004). Foreign aid is a program whose effectiveness is largely affected by the environment of the recipient country. The environment ranges from economic, political to social.
This essay, therefore, examines the effect that war and peace have on the distribution of foreign aid. The essay also discusses the positive and negative effects that peace and war have on the distribution of foreign aid. The actions taken by the leadership in place through the use of foreign aid in solving the problems caused by warfare is also discussed. Finally, the essay examines whether the extension of foreign aid has successfully reduced poverty and incidence of warfare.
I have chosen Cuba in discussing the above-mentioned issues in relation to foreign Aid distribution. Following the end of cold war, Cuba was left without a superpower ally. Due to this, it did not only lost protection but also its most trading partners. Therefore, this is evidence that war creates some sort of isolation (Joppe & Nillesen, 2009). Distribution of foreign aid is interrupted which would eventually lead to poverty. After the cold war, Cuba entered a “special time” characterized by massive shortages of basic needs, for instance, food, medical and fuel (Perez, 2011).
Peace has some positive effects on the distribution of foreign Aid. These include better healthcare provision, wide national interest achievement, and creation of new trading partners (Berman & Shapiro, 2015). For example, Cuba’s success in overcoming the collapse of Soviet Union was attributed to its willingness to adopt political, economic and humanitarian engagement as its tool of survival. After a peaceful engagement, Cuba was able to promote its national interest, increase its trading partners and strengthen diplomatic relations. War, on the other hand, disturb...
