Read the John Marsh article, “Why Education Is Not an Economic Panacea” 

Compose a persuasive response (400-word minimum, 500-word maximum) that provides your opinion about the underlined part of Marsh’s quotation below. In your response, agree or disagree with President Bush and Dr. Marsh, but take a clear stand on the issue.

A few months before our first graduation, for example, President George W. Bush surprised journalists and observers by acknowledging the growing economic inequality in the United States. ”The fact is that income inequality is real,” Bush told an audience of Wall Street business executives. “It's been rising for more than 25 years.” He added: “The reason is clear. We have an economy that increasingly rewards education and skills because of that education."

Considering Dr. Marsh’s statement in his article that “it must seem as if the best way to get ahead is to get an education,” one paragraph of your essay must be devoted to how a person (high school age and above) should proceed to “get an education.”

NOTE: The quotations above will probably not be clear unless you have read Marsh’s entire essay.

The growing economic inequality in the U.S. has been a significant concern. The gap between high-earners and the low-earners has increased at a higher rate in the past few years. This has prompted the government, agencies, and individuals to propose different solutions to the problem. Education has appeared as a possible solution this issue. Large-scale educational expansions in the U.S. demonstrate the commitment to eradicate economic inequality through education. While there has been an emphasis on the essence of learning, Americans need to appreciate that education cannot solve all challenges, including economic inequality.
In America today, getting more education has become necessary. High school education is no longer enough for an American. The demand for workers with more than a diploma has increased. In the past, people without college education could earn a relatively good income as factory workers. However, “those days, or so the thinking goes, are over. In the new, postindustrial knowledge economy, the job market rewards those with an education and punishes those without one.” (Marsh 3). Hence, with the job market demanding more education, individuals have to work hard to attain more education. For instance, the starting salary for somebody with a degree is $37,800, which is more than those of employees who have no more than a high-school diploma, which stands at $32,000 (Marsh 4).
