France has for a long period of time presented itself as a secular State and has made several changes in their constitution to reinforce secularism. One of these changes includes a legislature that was passed banning the conspicuous display of religious symbols in public (Adrian, 2016). This ban did not specify any religious symbols and as such, Christian, Jews, Muslims, and any other religion were prohibited from displaying their symbols in public.
However, the issues against the Islamic scarf goes back to the late 90s where a group of Muslim girls had been expelled from school because their scarf highlighted how different they were from the rest of the school, yet the school wanted to highlight the similarities instead (Adrian, 2016).
