Critique of a Qualitative Research Report Name: Course: Date: Critique of a Qualitative Research Report Title The title for the research project was appropriate as it relates comprehensively to the key phenomenon and the main group under study. The title indicates that the research gives an in depth look at Pneumonia care and the nursing home. The research concentrates on the elderly in the nursing home and looks at their preferences when it comes to treatment and their involvement in some of the decision making hence this topic corresponds to the content of the research. Abstract The abstract of the research report is divided into four subheadings the background, methods, results, and the conclusion. This makes it short and concise while at the same time gives a conclusive summary of the main features in the report. The background of the abstract outlines the need for the research project and the main areas under focus. The abstract gives an insight on the method used for the research and the specific group used for the research. The abstract further gives an insight on the results of the research and its conclusion. Introduction The background of the reports gives an introduction of the research paper with clear identification of the phenomenon of interest. It relates the need of considering treating the elderly in the nursing home as opposed to taking them to hospitals as projection are that majority of the elderly will spend most of their time in nursing homes by the year 2020. Pneumonia has been identified as one of the major cause of mortality and morbidity along with other respiratory infections in the nursing homes. The diseases have also resulted in the highest hospitalization cases among nursing home residents hence a justification of the research paper. The paper raises the need for provision of health care in the nursing homes to help curb the high morbidity rates associated with respiratory diseases. Literature review The research gives a summary of the existing body of knowledge, which is contained in the background of the report. Past literature by various researchers indicates the need of focusing on the environment that medical care is given under. The review of literature indicates the inadequacy of previous researches in focusing on the preferences of nursing home residents and their families. The literature review in the research paper is not adequate and it is too brief. It does not give a large scope on previous studies and their main shortcomings. However, in the brief literature review there is establishment of a strong basis for the study into the phenomenon. The inadequacy of previous researches to focus on health care for nursing home residents necessitates the research. Research questions Research questions are not explicitly stated in the research report. Their absence is justifiable to some extent solely on the reason that the research topic and introduction give a clear outline of all that is under study. The lack of questions does not fail in giving the direction of the research. Method: research design and research tradition The main research method employed was randomized sampling of twenty nursing homes in Canada’s Southern Ontario locality. The research focused on different controlled trials at clinics to test the effectiveness of treating pneumonia patients in the nursing homes. Sampling and setting The group and population under study were the elderly, the nursing home, and the families of the elderly in the nursing home. The group under study has been fully described as they were allowed to participate in the clinical trials in shaping up the research. The description of the group under study has been categorized as those members who are sound enough to remember and fully participate in the whole process.
