For the past 2 years, the Covid-19 pandemic has spread throughout the world ravaging countries and economies in an unprecedented scale. It caused massive economic downtrends, and thousands of deaths all over the nation. Nevertheless, with the help of everyone including our government, citizens, and our allies we were also able to make significant and unprecedented improvements including the implementation of policies that curbed the Covid-19 situation rapidly, as well as the development of several vaccines that proved to be very helpful in reducing the risks of developing severe symptoms of the disease. However, danger once again looms before our nation.
For the past few months, reports show a spike in both national and international Covid-19 cases due to the Omicron strain. From a 7-day average of 380 cases on January 2, 2022 to 3,351 on January 8, 2022, it was clear that a new strain is among us (Johns Hopkins University, 2022). Although mortality rates have not spiked suggesting the effectiveness of the Covid-19 vaccines, the Japanese government decided that the best way to combat the pandemic is to utilize proactive measures to prevent the further spread of the disease; a declaration of national policy called “Bōei”.
