When the plunger is slammed the temperature inside the tube will increase but slightly. Temperature and pressure are macroscopic properties of gases. The two properties are related to molecular motion, which is a microscopic phenomenon. According Boyles law increase in temperature in gases leads to an increase in the pressure (Herapath, 1816). The converse is also true in that when pressure is increased the gases molecules are compressed and the volume is reduced.
The reduction in volume leads to a decrease in the intermolecular space. This is the distance between the gas molecules which is generally large for gases. According to the kinetic theory of gases the gas is made up of several particles which are in a constant state of random motion (Cact).
