Dow 30 refers to a stock market stock index and other stock indices created by Charles Dow, the co-founder of Dow Jones & Company. Charles Dow is also the editor of the Wall Street Journal. There are about 30 stocks listed in the Dow stock market index. Among these are Alcoa, AM Express, Boeing, Coca cola and Cisco (CNBC, 2010). The firms in Dow 30 have been observed to be market leaders and highly successful in their relevant markets (Basic Economics, 2010). This paper takes a look at the market structure of the Coca Cola Company and identifies the type of market the firm operates in. the paper also seeks to describe some of the advantages and disadvantages of the firm operating in the type of market identified.
Coca Cola Company started in the year 1886 by the idea of John Pemberton. Working in Atlanta as a pharmacist, Pemberton got inspired by a very simple mind and curiosity (The Coca-Cola Company, 2010). The birth of the concept occurred when Pemberton stirred a fragrant which turned out to become a sort of liquid that assumed the color of caramel. He then took the idea to the pharmacy owned by Jacob in Atlanta where they put together the mixture from his fragrant with carbonated water. After the mixture was sampled by the customers, it was unanimously agreed that the drink was superior. Upon receiving acceptance, Jacob’s pharmacy put the drink on sale for a price of five cents per each glass. Today, Coca Cola is the world leading company in beverage sale (The Coca-Cola Company, 2010).
